After work yesterday my company had a happy hour at Hugo Restaurant in Oakley. Meg and I love the food at this place and I get to pick the locations for our work events now so I thought it would be great to have our get together there. Every time I go to Hugo, I fall in love with something new on the menu. This time it was their pulled pork shoulder served with creole slaw on a homemade biscuit. The pork is perfectly cooked and the BBQ sauce was zesty but didn’t overpower the pork. The slaw provides a crisp clean counterpoint to the pork with the creole seasoning giving it just a hint of spice. The crowning glory is the perfectly made biscuit. Flaky, crumbly, buttery; they reminded me of biscuits from my childhood.
Service in the bar was excellent as well. Brian Mulroy handles all things bar related at Hugo and he provided fabulous service to us for the evening. Several people in our group prefer standard american beer (miller, bud, michelob) which Hugo does not carry. Brian made recommendations that pleased everyone and hopefully introduced some people to some new beers. The recommendations I overheard were for the always fabulous Stone ales as well as Scrimshaw.
Personally I took the oppurtunity to try a new wine from their excellent wine list. The 2003 Montitius Gigondas was absolutely delicious.
